A solution containing huge numbers and variety of bacteria and micro-organisms that are all beneficial to the aquarium. These bacteria focus on rapid breakdown of the unwanted compounds in the aquarium such as nitrates and phosphates. This is accomplished through the many different strains of bacteria working on an imaginary production line with nitrates and phosphates going in one end, then each of the bacteria strains does its own part of the process and free nitrogen is released out at the end of the process.

Now unfortunately, many these bacteria are short lived (either through short life spans or lack of suitable food) and so must be replenished on a regular basis. This works out to be approximately two times a week, or every 4 days. If they are not replaced then many of the strains will die and create an imbalance in the tank biology (I?d like to add at this point that this is not the end of the world. We have successfully run tanks for 4-6 weeks without adding top-up bacteria, but these were mature systems which had been running the method for some time and we continued to add ZEOstart daily as a food source.) Whilst possible then, we would not recommend stopping the dosage of ZEObak once the tank is fully established on the method.

On a positive note you don?t need to add very much ZEObak to your tank so a small 10ml bottle will last several months on all but the largest of systems (150gallons plus). Just remember to store the bottle in the fridge to keep it at its best once it has been opened.
